Xylem and phloem in roots, stems and leavesSpec 8.1.2

In short

Xylem and phloem are found together in vascular bundles in the roots, stems and leaves of a dicotyledonous plant. In the root, xylem is in the centre, often in an X shape, with phloem between its arms. In the stem, bundles form a ring with xylem inside and phloem outside. In a leaf vein, xylem lies above phloem.

You must be able to find xylem and phloem in sections of the roots, stems and leaves of a non-woody dicotyledonous plant. In all three organs they are found together, in groups called vascular bundles (veins in the leaf).

Position of xylem and phloem
OrganWhere the vascular tissue isXylem and phloem
Rootin the centre of the rootxylem in the middle, often in an X or star shape, with phloem between the arms of the X
Stemvascular bundles in a ring near the outside of the stemin each bundle, xylem is on the inside and phloem on the outside
Leafin the midrib and the veinsin each vein, xylem is on the upper side and phloem on the lower side
Cross-sections of a root, a stem and a leaf of a non-woody dicotyledonous plant. Root: root hairs, epidermis, cortex, xylem in an X shape in the centre with phloem between the arms. Stem: epidermis, a ring of vascular bundles with phloem on the outside and xylem on the inside, and pith. Leaf: upper epidermis, palisade mesophyll, spongy mesophyll, lower epidermis with a stoma, and a vein with xylem above phloem. (opens full size in a new tab)
Root: xylem in the centre. Stem: bundles with phloem outside, xylem inside. Leaf vein: xylem above phloem.

To identify the tissues in a photograph, find the vascular bundle or vein first, then use its position to decide which tissue is which.

Common mistake:

Do not mix up the order in the stem. Phloem is on the outside of each bundle and xylem is on the inside.

Quick check

  1. What does phloem transport?

    Show answer

    Sucrose and amino acids.

  2. What are the two functions of xylem?

    Show answer

Transport of water and mineral ions, and support.

  3. In a stem, which tissue is on the outside of a vascular bundle?

    Show answer

    Phloem.

  4. Supplement Why do xylem vessels have no cross walls?

    Show answer

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between xylem and phloem?

Xylem transports water and mineral ions upwards from the roots and also supports the plant. Phloem transports sucrose and amino acids around the plant. Both are found together in vascular bundles. In a stem, phloem is on the outside of each bundle and xylem is on the inside.

How are xylem vessels adapted to their function?

Supplement Xylem vessels have thick walls containing lignin, which makes them strong so they do not collapse and the plant is supported. They have no cell contents, so nothing blocks the water. Their cells are joined end to end with no cross walls, forming a long continuous tube so water moves up in one unbroken column.

Where are xylem and phloem in a root?

In a root, the xylem and phloem are in the centre. The xylem is in the middle, often in an X or star shape, and the phloem lies between the arms of the X. This is different from the stem, where the vascular bundles form a ring near the outside of the stem.
