Cambridge IGCSE Biology, topic 17

Inheritance

Inheritance is how genetic information is passed from cells to daughter cells and from parents to offspring. This topic covers chromosomes, genes and the proteins they code for, the two types of cell division (mitosis and meiosis), and how characteristics are inherited, including dominance, codominance and sex linkage.

Subtopics

Work through them in order. Each one has notes, exam questions and flashcards, and a PDF of each.

  1. 1Chromosomes, genes and proteins Spec 17.1Chromosomes, genes and alleles, how sex is inherited, how genes control protein production, gene expression, and haploid and diploid nuclei.NotesQuestions 7Flashcards 14
  2. 2Mitosis and meiosis SupplementSpec 17.2, 17.3Mitosis gives genetically identical cells for growth and repair; stem cells; meiosis halves the chromosome number to make gametes.NotesQuestions 6Flashcards 8
  3. 3Monohybrid inheritance Spec 17.4Genetic terms, genetic diagrams and pedigrees, the test cross, codominance and ABO blood groups, and sex linkage.NotesQuestions 7Flashcards 20
