Edexcel GCSE Combined Science, topic 6

Plant structures and their functions

Plants and algae make their own food by photosynthesis, and nearly every food chain depends on them. This topic covers how photosynthesis works and what limits it, how water, mineral ions and sucrose move around a plant, how leaves are built for their jobs, and how plant hormones control growth.

Subtopics

Work through them in order. Each one has notes, exam questions and flashcards, and a PDF of each. Triple-only subtopics are left out.

  1. 1Photosynthesis and limiting factors Spec 6.1–6.6Photosynthesis as the source of food and biomass, its equation, the limiting factors, the light intensity core practical and the inverse square law.NotesQuestions 7Flashcards 19
  2. 2Transport in plants Spec 6.7–6.10Root hair cells, xylem and phloem, transpiration and the stomata, and translocation of sucrose.NotesQuestions 8Flashcards 15
  3. 3Leaves, water uptake and extreme environments Spec 6.11B–6.14BHow a leaf is built for photosynthesis and gas exchange, what changes water uptake, transpiration calculations and plants in extreme environments.NotesQuestions 7Flashcards 14

Not in Combined Science: Plant hormones.
